Good news, bad news, and another year older
41 today. Seems like an eternity since the big 4-0 party last year and not a lot to show for it. My car does not have much life left in it. The Ethernet connection between my laptop and DSL box isn't working, so me haz n0 h0m3 IntarWeb ATM. Lost my favorite hat over the weekend. Confluence difficulties taking ominous shape (more below).
But, was just told my contract has been renewed, so I've got work for a few more months. Therefore: 1. Replacement car. 2. Studio time for next album(s). Also, CPAP is working fine and I'm getting better sleep; also back on Lipitor and generally feeling better. Won the FKO songwriting contest and got another song done for the first time in forever. Enjoying
vixyish's and
tfabris' stellar "Thirteen" (although the first half does more for me than the second), one of the best-performed and best-produced filk albums I've listened to in, oh, years. Gas well might be drilled on our church's property, potentially making a major difference in the church finances, which have been a matter of prayer for this Board of Trustees Chairperson for years. So, on the whole, can't complain.
I am concerned about the Saturday night entertainment for this year's Confluence. First there's our musical travesty, "The Girl in the Firefly" (Dr. Who's "The Girl in the Fireplace" meets "Firefly"/"Serenity" to the music of "Annie Get Your Gun"). The first draft of the script is done, and we had well-announced auditions scheduled for last Friday; no one besides the casting crew showed up. Nobody came to read for any parts at the similarly well-announced auditions on Monday either. We wrote the play for a large number of characters, because in previous years we've had more actors than we've had roles to give them; even if we excise some of the minor parts, we'll need at least 12 to 14 people on stage and 4 to 6 more backstage. And we have, I think, 5 onstage people and 3 backstage people right now. I would really like us to be able to put this play on, especially given the publicity we've put behind it already. (And, gorram it, it would be both fun and funny.) But unless we get a lot of folks to step up, I don't see how we can manage it.
Second, there's the Lord Landless Featured Filk Guest concert. I have been trying to reach Thesilée of Lord Landless for some time now to finalize their travel and hotel arrangements, and I'm getting no response. I really hope all is still well with them, and that they're still planning on coming? (Maybe
shannachie or
katyhh could check up on them for me?) As much as I'd dislike having to peform a different play (or no play at all) this year, it would really suck to have to find a different FFG at this late date!
Sigh...must stop and do some actual work. Maybe more thoughts later. Belated happy birthdays to Rand,
kitespirit,
tfabris,
peteralway, and the huge number of others I've missed in the past year. Co-happy birthday to
slyfoot, and two-day-in-advance happy birthdays to
ci5rod,
kinder1of5, and
amg04. As
vixyish might say (or maybe not -- my French is really rusty), "Joyeux Anniversaires à Nous!"
