New song: "Heal Thyself"
This overdue Circle assignment had been brewing in my mind for some time and I finally wrote it at FKO. Didn't get a chance to perform it for anybody except [info]ldwheeler, and I think it still needs a bridge and some work at the end, but here it is for now.

"Heal Thyself"
Lyrics and music written 4/5-6/08, ©2008 W. Randy Hoffman
Written for March 2008 Pittsburgh Songwriters Circle (topic was "healing")

I stand here pressed against the wall hoping that no one will see
I'd rather be 'bout anywhere else but I have grave responsibility
For I'm the party's healer and I'll care for them dependably
I just don't think they realize that one good hit would be the end of me
> Our tank gets hit point blank by dragon breath and doesn't even break a sweat
> Our thief is like a leaf on the wind, no monster's hit him yet
> Our mage stands way offstage and casts the spells that put our foes to rout
> Me, I'm the medic, slightly diabetic, and a baby orc could take me out

I wince every time the clashing blades get closer than twenty feet
But I try to look bored and lean on my sword like someone you don't want to meet
I hold up my shield for hiding my hands 'mid the bolts of fire and frost
With private passes I restore the health that my company has lost
> Our bard don't try too hard, she charms 'em to jump right in the moat
> The ranger stays a stranger with her called shots to the throat
> Our monk's got a trunk like polished oak and his kung fu is mighty fine
> Me, I'm the nurse, and I'll be in a hearse unless the fighters hold that line

After each battle my buddies are grateful that I've kept them alive
So they try to outfit me with gear so impressive they think it'll help me survive
But though my Constitution's what really sucks, my Strength also gets short shrift
In this dwarven plate, I can't move for the weight, and the weapons I can't even lift
> Our paladin, sim sallah bim, she prays and then smites them all
> Our clerics have divine hysterics and bash their heads with a maul
> Witch hunter breathes out thunder, brings the fire to burn each sin
> Me, I'm the surgeon, a combat virgin, with FRAGILE marked upon my chin

Just yesterday there came our way a woman pale and thin
Turned out to be a lich enchantress with illusionary skin
One by one they all succumbed to her skeletal allure
It was up to me to save the bacon of our smitten little corps
> Our assassin spoke his passion to kill a host at her command
> The cavalier, he volunteered to duel for her bony hand
> Our rogue thought it in vogue to sneak around to pledge his will
> Me, I'm the doctor, I really rocked her, broke my fist against her skull
> Me, I'm the healer, undead death dealer, what a time for my first kill!

THE END

As the party cleric in most of the campaigns I've been in, I have *lived* (and died) by this song's tenets and doctor-ines.

"Doctor-ines"...arggghh. Glad if it resonates, though!

Wow--you're being creative lately! I've usually played the ranger-type, trying to hold the line so the fragile folk behind me don't get splattered. That has its own kind of desperation :-)

I don't think I'm being terribly creative right now, compared to other phases of my life. But if I am, it's about time. :-)

True enough. There's another song in there somewhere...

This reminds me of a button I always wanted to have made: One Heal Of a [Neutral-]Good Cleric!

:)

Fun song!
