Pegasus Brainstorming Poll!
If you haven't already done so, gather up your suggestions and post them to the 2008 Pegasus Brainstorming Poll at http://ovff.org/pegasus/2008poll.html. The poll closes tomorrow night!
Best Filk Song? I'll keep nominating "Uplift" till it wins, although there are vast numbers of other great candidates out there.
Best Classic Filk? "Ship of Stone" would be one of my suggestions, but it has to take a year off because it's been nominated each of the past two years. (I still don't like that rule. Maybe I'll suggest "Ship of Stone" for Best Song instead, but "Uplift" must win.) That leaves Juanita's "Chess" as the Classic song I most want to see take this category, although "Little Fuzzy Animals" needs to win something at some point too.
Best Songwriter/Composer: There are loads of great songwriters in filk, but Ben Newman is in my #1 slot here. It burns me up that not only has he never won a Pegasus, he's never even been an Interfilk guest. The man is a genius; it's sad that (seemingly) because he doesn't attend many cons and releases his songs for free download rather than selling CDs, he gets so little attention. I'll also be suggesting such persons as Chris Conway, Dr. Mary Crowell, Batya Wittenberg, and (surprise) Devo Spice (Tom Rockwell) of Sudden Death. Seriously, Tom's songwriting is reaching stellar proportions of good; he captured three of the top four spots on Dr. Demento's Funny 25 of 2007, which I don't believe has ever happened before.
Best Performer: This category is simply too overloaded, and is often swayed by memorable recent at-con performances. vixy and Tony will get a nod here, I'm sure, but I'll suggest folks such as Chris Conway, Joe Giacoio, and Margaret & Kristoph (yeah, OK, saw them play at Confluence, but I've been impressed by their performance for years).
Best Tragedy: Ugh. Not into doom, evil fate, depression, or ose. Can hardly think of a tragic song I even want to listen to twice. I guess Mac Carson's "Brother Michael's Song" and Luke Ski's "Murder Was the Play" would be at the head of my suggestion list, along with maybe Mark Osier's "Monster and Man," Bill Roper's "The Destroyer," Lawrence Dean's "Gormenghast," Gwen Knighton's "Song of Fey Cross" (whose tragicness is entirely debatable), and (if almost-tragedy counts) Robin Nakkula's "Asteroid Ore." Oh, hey, almost forgot Tim Jennings' otherwise virtually unforgettable "Sealskin Jacket," which is right up there in awesomeness!
Best Comedy: Way, way, WAY too much gold to mine here. Just citing one song from each artist, Luke Ski's "Stealing Like a Hobbit," Sudden Death's "Inner Voice," Ookla's "Mr. W," Rob Balder's "Always a Goth Chick," Tom Smith's "Talk Like a Pirate Day," Jonathan Coulton's "Skullcrusher Mountain," The Boogie Knights' "Happy to Get Her," Moonwulf's "Bob's Dog Obedience School and Taxidermy Shop," Chris Conway's "Alien Salad Abduction," Leslie Fish's "Excommunion"...the list just goes on and on and on.
Suggest away, folks, but be sure to submit your list on the website before 12 AM Sunday morning!
