Went ahead and bought the '09 Matrix. It took until 45 minutes after the dealership officially closed to sign all the papers, but then the sales guy actually stayed for *another 45 minutes* -- well after everyone else had left -- to explain all the car's features to me and make sure I had a full tank of gas. (I think I picked the right people to buy a vehicle from.) So far, I like the car a lot; of course, at this point, any easy ride with a smooth transmission and an engine that doesn't sound like it's thinking of throwing a rod would probably impress me that way. ;-D

Our family has a long tradition of naming all of our cars. So, I've dubbed this silver Matrix..."Neo." (If it starts misbehaving -- which I hope is not for years and years and years -- I can refer to it as "Mr. Anderson.") Hee hee hee...

EDIT: BTW, I want to thank everybody who contributed suggestions in response to yesterday's post. I very much appreciate that! While I would have liked to spend several more days fully investigating all the options, the car shopping had been very distracting and I'd become increasingly concerned about the Saturn's viability, so I felt as though I needed to make this transition now, at the end of the month while the dealers were at their most willing to accommodate buyers. The next time I have to do this (in the far future, I hope), I'll try to get serious about the process earlier and leave myself more time to try a bigger variety of vehicles.

Thanks much! I'm glad too...it was a much nicer experience than the high-pressure sales pitch I got from the dealership I went to Tuesday night.

Let me know how it is. I'm strongly inclined to get a Matrix (well, a Vibe cause half my family works for GM) next, soonish.

I'll keep all yunz posted. :-) So far, I'm only annoyed by a few things about the car:

1. The cruise control indicator shows when cruise is *enabled*, but not when it's *engaged*, so it can be hard to tell on a downhill whether cruise control is set properly or not.

2. The "trunk" (cargo area) is smooth plastic; the car should come with mats you can put down on that surface, because anything you put back there slides all over the place.

3. The car transmits a lot of road noise to the occupants.

4. The driver's seat-belt latch is right up against the center console; overweight drivers such as myself will find it easy to scrape their pinky knuckle if they're not careful.

So far, all my concerns are minor. I like the instrument panel (although nobody but the driver can really see it), the adjustable placement of the seat-belt pulley, the tilting *and* telescoping steering wheel, the multitudinous air bags, the mostly-vertical glove compartment, the map lights that double as their own on/off buttons, and most of the other features. The car has several nice little design touches; for example, most of the stuff under the hood is color-coded, and the handle for the oil dipstick is shaped like an "O" while the handle for the transmission dipstick is shaped like a "T". I'm sure that most of this stuff is common in recent cars, but I haven't driven (or even been a passenger in) many of those.

Mazel Tov! May you have many years of good traveling with it.

Which dealer was that? I'm likely to be helping my mom buy a car in the foreseeable future.

The dealership was Diehl Auto Group in Butler. The hyper-accommodating sales guy was named Alan (last name Livermore I believe?).
