1. Does the makeup of the Best Song category indicate that the proportion of nominations coming from European filk fen continues to rise, or that the nominations for Best Song were so utterly fragmented that small groups of unified nominators could get their choices on the ballot? Or maybe both are partially true?
2. OK, we threw out the original guidance for the Best Comedy category; no problem, I can live with that. But while these songs are terrific, fun, amusing, and catchy...I have to say that they seem to have been chosen primarily for their shtick value -- more because their *performances tend to be memorable* than for the quality of the songs themselves.
Which leads me to...
3. The dementia artists continue to get no love from us old-skool filkers; none at all. With the (conveniently definitionally ignored) Best Comedy category in play, this was our best opportunity in years to give some props to fellow fen and frequent convention performers such as Luke Ski (lukeski), Sudden Death (devospice), Worm Quartet (wormquartet), etc., etc., and some of their amazing songs. (Frankly, many of the fannish dementia songwriters have written numbers better than some or all of the Best Comedy nominees on this ballot. If you have not heard recent Luke gems such as "Gettin' Giggity With It" or almost anything non-disease-related from Sudden Death's latest album, "Fatal Error," Go! Seek! Buy!) But...no. Not a single nod in their direction, and it's very sad. It makes me wonder why they should play funny acoustic folky-filk on their podcasts or The FuMP or promote it in any of their other nefarious and effective ways when we seem to reflexively disregard their funny computer-synthesized (but insanely well-crafted) rap/metal filk. Sigh...the Grand Alliance will have to be built one small step at a time, I guess.
